How to get ready for your headshot.

Most of a great headshot happens at the shoot, and that part is my job. Here's what you can do beforehand so you walk in feeling ready.

What to wear

  • Bring two or three tops. Every session includes two looks, and it helps to have a backup in case something doesn't photograph the way you hoped.
  • Solid colors win. Mid-tones and rich colors like navy, forest, burgundy, and soft blue look great on almost everyone. Skip busy patterns, tiny stripes, big logos, and neon.
  • Layers make an easy second look. A blazer or cardigan over a simple top gives you a polished version and a relaxed version in one outfit.
  • Fit matters more than brand. Wear something that fits well today, and steam or iron it the night before.
  • Dress for where the photo will live. A law firm bio and a creative portfolio call for different clothes. If you're not sure, bring both and we'll decide together.

Hair, makeup, and grooming

  • Get a haircut about a week before, not the day before, so it has time to settle.
  • Wear makeup the way you usually do, maybe with a little more definition. Matte products photograph better than shiny ones.
  • Bring blotting papers or powder for shine, and a comb or brush.
  • If you shave, do it the morning of. If you have a beard, trim it the way you like it.
  • Glasses are welcome if you usually wear them. I'll adjust the light to keep glare off the lenses.

The night before

  • Get a good night's sleep and drink plenty of water. It shows up in your eyes and skin.
  • Lay out your outfits, pack a lint roller, and plan to arrive a few minutes early so you're not rushed.

At the shoot

  • You don't need to know how to pose. I'll guide you through every angle and expression, and we'll take breaks whenever you want.
  • Most people feel stiff for the first few minutes. That's normal, and it passes. The best shots usually come once you've stopped thinking about the camera.

Getting your team ready

  • Pick a simple color guide for everyone, like solid colors with no patterns, so the photos look consistent side by side.
  • I'll use the same backdrop and lighting for every person, so new hires can be added later and still match.
  • I'll build a schedule so each person only steps away from work for a few minutes.
